San Diego Native Kevin de León Elected President Pro Tem of State Senate
Kevin de Leon, who grew up in the San Diego neighborhood of Logan Heights, was elected today president pro tem of the state Senate.
De Leon, a Democrat who represents Los Angeles communities in the Legislature's upper chamber, is scheduled to succeed Sen. Darrell Steinberg, D- Sacramento, on Oct. 15.
His election means both chambers of the Legislature will be led by officials with San Diego connections. Democrat Toni Atkins recently became the first San Diegan to become speaker of the Assembly.

De Leon will take over a troubled state Senate, in which three of his Democratic colleagues are facing criminal charges. He will be the first Latino leader of the body since 1883.
