San Diego Councilwoman Lightner Outlines Accomplishments of 2013

In her December newsletter, San Diego City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner outlined some of her favorite accomplishments in District 1 and beyond for 2013. 

Lightner, whose district includes La Jolla, Carmel Valley and University City, said she hope to move ahead next year on several major projects, such as: the Governor/Genesee intersection improvement project, La Jolla Cove and Children’s Pool lifeguard stations, Torrey Pines Corridor Project, Mid-Coast Trolley Extension to UTC, and a Coastal Management Plan to deal with the proliferation of marine mammals and wildlife along the coastline.

  • Completed La Jolla Shores Lifeguard Station and Tower.
  • Approved plans for Gonzales Canyon Neighborhood Park.
  • Completed Carmel Valley Library Beautification program.
  • Upgraded Sewer Pump Station 27 in La Jolla.
  • Passed new guidelines for city-wide graywater use.
  • Installed Bird Rock Pedestrian Crossing.
  • Completed storm drain project, resurfaced and added bike lanes into the Village on Torrey Pines Road.
  • Urged Congress to help save the historic La Jolla Post Office.
  • Added new school crosswalk on Girard Avenue.
  • Crafted a proposed Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance to eliminate litter, save on landfill clean up costs and help the environment.
  • Led the Council’s efforts to craft a long-term vision for San Diego’s economy.
  • Reformed two key City Charter provisions related to special elections.
  • Hosted Cyber Security Summit to support growing tech industry sector.
  • Pushed for an Open Data Policy to increase transparency, access and citizen participation in local government.
  • Revitalized the City’s youth jobs program.
  • Adopted Water Policy Implementation Task Force recommendations for a more sustainable local water supply.
  • Approved Convention Center expansion project.
  • Adopted a Five-Year Police Plan to put more police officers on our streets and in our neighborhoods.
