La Jolla May See Two New Parks

Residents gathered at the La Jolla Parks and Beaches Committee meeting on Monday to discuss a foul odor at The Cove, weddings at Windansea beaches, a park ranger at the Children's Pool and other agenda items.

The met Monday afternoon at the . Here are some of the highlights from the meeting:

  • The City of San Diego will assign a park ranger to patrol the Children’s Pool. The park ranger’s responsibilities will include educating people and mediating disputes. The park ranger’s hours and days of patrol have not been set.
  • Representing the La Jolla Community Planning Association, Joe LaCava presented a plan that would dedicate two areas as parklands in La Jolla, including an area across from La Jolla Fire Station 13 and a bike path that runs along Beaumont Avenue and Via Del Norte. The plan will be voted on at next month’s meeting.
  • A foul odor wafting from La Jolla Cove was brought to the attention of the La Jolla Parks and Beaches Committee. Residents and organizations discussed possible measures to address the issue. It’s unlikely the City of San Diego will pay to neutralize the smell. One resident suggested the La Jolla Merchants Association should team up with restaurants affected by the odor and look for a solution.
  • Representatives from Friends of Coast Walk presented a proposal to manage trees and reestablish the edge of Park Row as a public viewing corridor. Due to large trees, the ocean isn’t viewable from Prospect Place and Park Row. Key points of the proposal include: removing a large pepper tree, reducing the height of several trees, thinning another tree and setting up a maintenance program designed to monitor and maintain specific trees at Park Row. The City of San Diego would not pay for the proposal. Funding for the proposal would come from private donations. Some residents voiced concerns that the proposal could increase traffic and draw late-night partiers to Park Row. The proposal will likely be voted on at next month’s meeting.
  • A committee representing Windansea Beach reported that wedding parties have been using the iconic shack for ceremonies. However, this will no longer be allowed. Since the shack was designated as a historic site to honor surfers, The City of San Diego forbids wedding parties who have rented Windansea Beach from using the shack.

The next La Jolla Parks and Beaches Committee meeting will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 at the , 615 Prospect St.
