Ready for Another President from Texas?

A campaign consultant based in La Jolla announced Wednesday that Texas Gov. Rick Perry may run for president.

The list of 2012 presidential candidates continues to grow. Texas Gov. Rick Perry has yet to decide whether to run for the Republican presidential nomination, but supporters kicked off an Iowa campaign for him, said political consultant and La Jollan Bob Schuman on Wednesday.

Schuman, who has worked on campaigns for Pete Wilson, Phil Gramm and Jack Kemp, said Perry is expected to announce his intentions after a day or prayer and fasting on August 6. The Iowa straw poll is just a week later, necessitating the proxy campaign, he said.

“We need someone who can excite the base of the Republican Party but also attract independents, and you need independent voters to win,” said Schumann.

The effort started after a group of Assembly members traveled to Texas to find how the state was creating new jobs, he said. Schuman said several of the politicians in the delegation returned with the intention of drafting Perry into a presidential run.

Perry was recently in San Diego to speak at a Boy Scouts event that honored KUSI television owner Michael McKinnon, who also has operations in Texas.
