Law Gives Local Lifeguards Upgrade in Worker's Comp Benefits

Lifeguards in La Jolla and other area communities now will receive benefits equal to police officers and firefighters if they are injured.

San Diego city lifeguards will receive equal benefits to other public safety officials like police and firefighters thanks to a new law sponsored by a local legislator.

State Senator Marty Block, according to NBCSanDiego.com, sought the law to improve workers' compensation benefits received by lifeguards when they be injured on the job.

When police or firefighters are injured they are eligible for a leave of absence of up to 12 months with their salaries intact. Lifeguards were subject to the rules that govern all other workers, giving them only temporary benefits.

The law will be officially on the books as of Jan. 1, 2014. San Diego has 90 lifeguards, according to the report.
