Medical Marijuana Fight Continues in San Diego

San Diego City Council can either repeal an April decision that placed additional zoning restrictions or put the issue to public vote.

A referendum aimed at overturning restrictions on medical marijuana in San Diego got enough voter signatures to qualify for the ballot, said to City Clerk Elizabeth Maland on Wednesday. The results mean that city council will have to decide whether to repeal the law they passed earlier this year or put the issue to a public vote. Council members also have the option to call a special election.

In March, San Diego City Council approved two ordinances that place greater restrictions and oversight on medical marijuana cooperatives and their operators.

The ordinances restricted medical marijuana dispensaries to light industrial and commercial areas of the city and must be at least 600 feet from homes and other sensitive areas. The second ordinance requires additional public safety requirements including requiring operators to be fingerprinted.
