Marines Cancel Upcoming Miramar Air Show

Officials at MCAS Miramar learned Thursday morning that the popular, annual event would be cancelled due to the federal government shutdown

One day before it was supposed to start, the annual Miramar Air Show became a casualty of the government shutdown, with the military announcing its cancellation Thursday.

"We are disappointed to announce that the air show has been canceled," tweeted the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

Officials at MCAS Miramar learned only this morning that the show would be cancelled due to the federal government shutdown, said Marine 1st Lt. Chad Hill of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing's public affairs office.

The 58th annual aerial extravaganza was scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The show was scaled back from its usual three days to two after the Defense Department announced earlier this year that military flight demonstrations would not be allowed due to automatic spending cuts known as "sequestration." That included the Navy's wildly popular Blue Angels. Sequestration affected air shows around the country.
