La Jolla Leaders to Protest Against Possible Post Office Sale

La Jolla community leaders are scheduled to urge the U.S. Postal Service Thuesday not to sell the post office on Wall Street as part of a nationwide consolidation effort.

The USPS will hold a community meeting at 6 p.m. at the Cuvier Club at 7776 Eads Ave. to discuss its plans and seek community input. Organizers expect around 300 people to attend.

The meeting is the only chance for members of the public to speak to postal officials face-to-face about the proposed closure.

The agency lost $3.3 billion in a recent quarter and is reorganizing in order to save $20 billion by 2015. Postal officials in February suggested shutting down 223 offices nationwide.

Also on the chopping block, in a separate closure process, is the postal distribution facility on Midway Drive. The facility was supplanted by a larger building in Carmel Mountain Ranch nearly 20 years ago.
