DeMaio Announces $483K Raised in 52nd District Campaign

DeMaio said the donations came from more than 800 contributors.

Carl DeMaio, the former San Diego city councilman now running for La Jolla's congressional district, announced Tuesday that he had raised nearly half a million dollars for his campaign in one month.

“I’m grateful to receive this strong early support, which I believe reflects both my record of getting fiscal reforms done in San Diego and my more inclusive vision for the future as a ‘new generation Republican,’” DeMaio said in a statement.

The one-month tally of $483,366 came in between May 30 and June 30, with none from DeMaio, $26,000 from political action committees and donations from more than 800 contributors, according to the announcement.

DeMaio failed in his bid to become San Diego's mayor last fall after representing District 5 on the City Council for one term. He formally announced his run for the 52nd Congressional District—represented by Democrat Scott Peters—on May 30.

"I see myself as a 'new generation Republican' who wants to challenge the party to focus on pocket-book, economic and quality of life issues in a more positive and inclusive way, rather than issues that are frankly none of the government's business in the first place," he said at the time.

Last month, the Lincoln Club of San Diego County threw its support behind DeMaio's campaign for Congress, calling him "100 percent committed to reforming government, keeping taxes low and creating the best possible environment for job creators to thrive."

The 52nd District includes La Jolla, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch, Coronado, Carmel Valley and several other north/coastal communities.
