Councilwoman Lightner Says Mayor's Alleged Sexual Harassment "Cannot Be Tolerated"

Donna Frye and attorneys Marco Gonzalez and Cory Briggs each asked San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign. Frye, a former councilwoman, said several women made allegations of sexual harassment against the mayor.

San Diego Councilwoman Sherri Lightner is the latest public official to comment on the allegations including sexual harassment against Mayor Bob Filner.

Lightner, who represent La Jolla, Carmel Valley, University City and Del Mar Heights, released the following statement at 10 a.m. on Friday:

"I was deeply troubled by the serious allegations made yesterday regarding the Mayor’s conduct. Sexual harassment is demeaning and harmful behavior which cannot be tolerated. I appreciate that the Mayor is working with professionals to change both his personal behavior and the tone he has established within his office. I look forward to working with my Council colleagues to focus on the important business at hand in our city."

Filner admitted wrongdoing in response to multiple sexual harassment claims Thursday. See video here.

Councilman Scott Sherman joining those asking the mayor to go.

"I am calling on Mayor Filner to resign," Sherman said in a statement issued after the video was released. "He has admitted that he is guilty of sexually harassing women and his actions are unacceptable under any circumstance. Unfortunately this is the latest and most disturbing of a series of scandals that make him incapable of leading our city."

And Council President Todd Gloria, who would fill the mayor's seat temporarily should he resign, encouraged those with allegations to come forward, saying sexual harassment is a "serious matter."
