City Council President Todd Gloria Earns LGBT Award

Todd Gloria was named an LGBT Hero by the California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus.

San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria was one of 10 people honored by the state Legislature for their work to promote equality for gay and lesbian Californians.

Gloria, who served as interim mayor after Bob Filner resigned last August, was named an LGBT Hero by the California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus.

"Our state is home to many impressive members of the LGBT community and to be included in such an impressive group is a proud moment for me," Gloria said. "Serving San Diego is rewarding every day, so this recognition is a true bonus."

Gloria, who is openly gay, helped get the name of a roadway in Hillcrest changed to Harvey Milk Street a couple of years ago to honor the slain San Francisco LGBT leader. He also guided permits through the City Council that allowed a large rainbow flag to be flown over the neighborhood, the traditional home of San Diego's gay and lesbian community.

Gloria won raves for his six-month stint as interim mayor and has been praised for his direction of the City Council and its Budget Committee.

Among the others honored by the LGBT Caucus was actor George Takei, who played Sulu in the old "Star Trek" television show.
