Candidate Field in San Diego Mayoral Race Rises to 14

Mission Valley real estate broker says he is "frustrated with the way things are going."

Add another prospective candidate to the list of those who want to become mayor of San Diego.

A Mission Valley real estate broker filed paperwork with the city clerk this week, the 14th to do so in the campaign to succeed Jerry Sanders in 2012.

"I'm just not hearing what I want to be hearing from the politicians,'' said Bradley Slavens, 45, who is making his first run for office. "I'm just frustrated with the way things are going.''

Slavens, a San Diego resident for nearly his entire life who recently went through a foreclosure, believes unemployment will go down if licensing requirements for many well-paying jobs are eased. He hopes to espouse his views in candidate debates and radio talk shows.

The eight other perceived longshots in the mayoral race are Sharam Adhami, Hud Collins, Loch David Crane, Steven Greenwald, Robert "Girly Girly'' Harter, Toby Lewandoski, Rocky Neptun and Tobiah Lee Pettus. Collins and Greenwald frequently address the City Council on a variety of issues.

The current office holders who are looked at as front-runners in the mayoral race include Councilman Carl DeMaio, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, Rep. Bob Filner (D-San Diego) and Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher (R-San Diego). Sen. Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) has also filed papers but has not decided whether to actively campaign.

Four council members are up for re-election in 2012, and three have filed to run again--Marti Emerald, Todd Gloria and Sherri Lightner. DeMaio has not entered the race to retain his seat should his mayoral bid fail.
