Water Main Break in La Jolla Closes Down Intersection at Girard and Pearl

An early evening water main break at the northeast corner of Girard Avenue and Pearl Street did not damage nearby businesses, according to San Diego police.

In the height of rush hour traffic, a water main break in La Jolla backed up vehicles near Pearl Street and Girard Avenue on Monday. A water main broke on the northeast corner of this intersection causing water to flood the streets and nearby sidewalks.

San Diego Police Acting Sgt. Sal Hurtado said a nearby business called in the report just before 6 p.m. Hurtado said no businesses had reported damages and the city's water department was on scene to evaluate and begin repair.

The 1000 block of Pearl Street from Girard to Herschel Avenue was closed and southbound traffic on Girard from Pearl Street to Genter was also closed off.

San Diego police estimated that traffic at the intersection will be limited for approximately 12 hours.
