Two Teens Die in Car-Racing Crash Leaving Party in La Jolla

Witnesses told the CHP that the teens were racing at speeds between 100 and 110 miles per hour on Route 52 after leaving a beach party in La Jolla.

Three high school students were hospitalized today following a rollover crash on state Route 52 that left two teens dead and one in custody, authorities said.

The double fatality on eastbound state Route 52 at Convoy Street was reported at 11:46 p.m. Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses told the CHP that the teens were in a Volkswagen Passat that was racing with a Volvo at speeds between 100 and 110 miles per hour when the crash occurred. CHP Sgt. Kevin Mensior told reporters the teens were from an East County high school and were headed home from a beach party in La Jolla.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified the deceased as Santee residents Anthony Foreman, 18, and Jaylie James Campbell, 16. They were each rear-seat passengers in the Passat and both were ejected from the vehicle, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.

The driver of the Volvo, an 18-year-old student who also attended the party, was arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail, the CHP reported. His name was not immediately released. He was suspected of being under the influence of marijuana at the time of the accident, according to the CHP.

The Volvo did not crash and no one in the vehicle was injured.

I was a friend of Anthony's, he was the sweetest person. A lot of people of websites are leaving mean and negative comments. Right now is not the time for blame or for pointing fingers. Right now is the time to grieve with the grieving. The 10 News called my mom and asked for info on Anthony and his family. If happens to you for anybody we shouldn't give out info because people are grieving and they don't need to be reminded and have to talk about it and grieve more. R.I.P. Anthony Foreman, Jayli Campbell, and Charlotte M. Charlotte is brain dead.

Anna -- great comment, especially considering Anthony wasn't even driving. I am not being critical of the drivers, but passengers have very little control over the situation. Thoughts and prayers to the families.
