SD Police Officer Facing Criminal Charges Found Dead

A San Diego police motorcycle patrolman accused of causing an off-duty hit-and-run while intoxicated earlier this year was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound at his home on Monday, authorities said.

The fatality at the home of Officer David Christopher Hall on Ashford Street in Clairemont Mesa was reported shortly before 10 a.m., police said.

Detective Gary Hassen said officers found a body at the scene, but officials did not immediately release the name of the dead man. A department source who spoke on condition of anonymity identified the man as Hall, who was facing three criminal counts in connection with the Feb. 22 traffic collision.

During the February collision, Hall's GMC Yukon reportedly crashed into another vehicle on the onramp from Murray Ridge Road to northbound Interstate 805 around 7:30 p.m. The crash injured a woman in the other vehicle, and the 41-year-old officer allegedly left the scene and drove home where police contacted him a short time later, police said.

On May 2, Hall pleaded not guilty to two counts of DUI causing injury, one count of felony hit-and-run and an allegation that his blood-alcohol level at the time of the crash was higher than .15 percent, which is about twice the legal limit for driving.

The charges carried a maximum penalty of up to three years and eight months in prison, and a pretrial hearing was scheduled for later this week.

Hall's death comes just weeks after the death of another officer.
