SD Lifeguards Rescue Boaters off Windansea

All eight passengers were not injured in the incident off Windansea.

The engine on a rented 40-foot powerboat overheated on Sunday off La Jolla, and lifeguards evacuated the eight people on board, city lifeguards said.

The party on the rented boat out of San Diego Bay radioed for help with a possible vessel fire after someone noticed a burning smell about 12:30 p.m. off Windansea Beach, according to city lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum.

The overheat problem had something to do with a coolant hose, Lerum said.

“There was no vessel fire, there was just some burnt rubber on a hose because of an engine overheating problem,” Lerum said.

The boat was being towed by a private company back to San Diego Bay and the boaters were being taken to Mission Bay by lifeguard and Harbor police boats, Lerum said.
