Mutilated Puppies Find Forever Homes

Brother and sister puppies Sunny and Cher were adopted in San Diego County.

Two puppies who were found with their ears cut off have been adopted into "forever homes," the county announced Tuesday afternoon.

Cher was adopted by Scott and Penny Scarbrough of El Cajon, and Sunny was adopted by Kathy Caplis of Oceanside. The furry duo had been staying with foster mom Candy Schumann, who works with the department as the volunteer executive director of the Spay Neuter Action Program, an organization that provides programs to battle the core causes of pet overpopulation. Schumann is a La Jolla resident.

The County of San Diego Department of Animal Services received more than 100 adoption applications for the Labrador/shepherd mix puppies. "All applications were evaluated and the adoptive families were chosen based on their ability to provide the best environment for each of the puppies," stated the department in its adoption announcment.

"After the abuse that these two puppies suffered at the hands of an unknown suspect, the department is happy to announce that both Sunny and Cher have been adopted into wonderful, loving families," said Dawn Danielson, director of Animal Services in a statement.

Sunny was found in a Mission Valley parking lot on Nov. 19. A few short weeks later, Cher—Sunny's litter mate—was found in Mexico, also with her ears cut off. She was taken to the County Animal Shelter.
