Great White Shark Spotted Off La Jolla Shores, Beaches Closed

San Diego lifeguards closed down La Jolla Shores from the Marine Room to Scripps Pier on Monday afternoon after a lifeguard spotted a great white shark 50 yards from shore.

San Diego lifeguards continue to look for a 12 to 15 foot white shark that was spotted about 50 yards off La Jolla Shores on Monday afternoon.

San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Greg Buchanan said a lifeguard spotted the shark while in the surf and numerous witnesses spotted the finned animal from shore at about 3:15 p.m.

Beaches from the Marine Room to Scripps Pier were closed down for the remainder of the day. Nearby beaches including Black's to the north, the Cove and the Children's Pool to the south were put under an advisory, which means swimmers and divers will be warned of the sighting.

As of 4:15 p.m. Monday afternoon, the San Diego lifeguards continued to search for the shark by boat, helicopter and from the La Jolla Shores lifeguard tower. A decision to reopen beaches will be made in the morning.

La Jolla is not new to . Last year, a group of five surfers reportedly spotted the 12-inch dorsal fin of a shark south of Casa Reef in La Jolla on Aug. 31, according to San Diego Lifeguard Services.
