Great White Shark Seen off La Jolla Cove

A 5-foot long shark was spotted off the coast of La Jolla Shores Thursday.

A small great white shark was spotted off La Jolla Cove Thursday. Two divers saw the 5-foot-long shark approximately 500 yards off the coast, roughly 30 feet below the surface at 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego Lifeguard Lt. John Everhart.

Lifeguards cautioned swimmers, surfers and divers entering the ocean in the area all afternoon. The animal’s presence is not considered an imminent public threat, according to Everhart.

According to National Geographic the average size great white shark is 15-feet-long and weighs up to 5,000 pounds.
