Former San Diego Woman Injured in Kenya Mall Attack

Elaine Dang, 26, a Torrey Pines High School graduate, was injured in an attack on a mall in Nairobi, Kenya by extremist group Al-Shabaab. Near 70 people have have reportedly been killed and 175 injured.

 A former San Diego resident was one of the about 175 people wounded in the attack on a mall in Nairobi, Kenya that left nearly 70 dead and several others held hostage, it was reported today.

Elaine Dang, 26, a Torrey Pines High School graduate, was working as a general manager for "Eat Out Kenya" and meeting co-workers at the Westgate Shopping Mall when the violence broke out Saturday, 10News reported.

The New Leaders Council based in La Jolla posted a tweet Saturday that said Dang was injured in the shooting, according to NBC San Diego.

The message posted to the group's Twitter page Saturday read:

“Prayers to @NLC_LA alum Elaine Dang, injured in Nairobi. She expects a full recovery. #muchlove #NLCFamily”

Dang said via Twitter "I am recovering. Thank you for all the love and support–in Kenya and overseas. Terrorism knows no religion."  A photo of Dang in a hospital bed with her head wrapped in bandages was also posted.

A Facebook message from Eat Out Kenya said in part "Members of our team who were at the Mall are all stable and being looked after. We have lost friends today and pray for the hostage situation to end."

No Americans were killed in the attack that apparently targeted non- Muslims, although several were among the wounded, according to CNN. Extremist group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, the national news agency reported.
