Body of Taxi Driver Found on La Jolla Sidewalk

San Diego Police are investigating the incident on La Jolla Scenic Drive North as a robbery and homicide.

San Diego police homicide detectives today investigated the robbery and death of a cab driver shot on a La Jolla sidewalk.

The body was found on the 8600 block of La Jolla Scenic Drive, across the street from the Adat Yeshurun synagogue late Wednesday night, said San Diego police Officer David Stafford. The victim was identified, but his name was held pending complete family notification.

An area resident reported hearing gunfire at 11:36 p.m. Wednesday, said San Diego police, and a patrol officer who went to investigate found the body of a 68-year-old male shot several times.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was a self-employed cab driver who was working at the time of the incident, said police.

Witnesses saw the cab pull to the curb of La Jolla Scenic Drive North and two males step out, according to police. There was an alleged exchange of words and a struggle, followed by several gunshots, police reported. The suspects then reportedly got into the cab and fled northbound on La Jolla Scenic Drive North, police said.

A Northern Division patrol officer located the cab unoccupied at 2:20 a.m. near the Cove on the 1,200 block of Coast Boulevard facing the opposite way of traffic.

At 6:30 a.m., Thursday, police said they had “no additional suspect information to share.” Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call the 619-531-2293.
