Body Found Floating Near Scripps Pier

The Medical Examiner's Office is working to determine the woman's identity.

A woman’s body was found floating in the Pacific Ocean just off Scripps Pier, a city lifeguard lieutenant said.

A citizen spotted the body about 100 yards northwest of the tip of the pier and reported it to lifeguards about 12:20 p.m. San Diego lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum said.

The body was that of a woman who appeared to have been in her mid-30s, Lerum said. It was unclear how long the body had been in the water.

“There was rigor mortis that had set in, so it had been some time. We don’t know exactly how much,” Lerum said.

Lifeguards recovered the corpse and brought it to the beach at the base of the pier, he said.

Personnel from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office were called to take possession of the body, Lerum said. They would work to determine the woman’s identity and cause of death, he said.
