Attempted Rape Reported at UCSD

Police say the incident is alleged to have taken place in an on-campus residence.

Police continue to investigate an attempted rape that allegedly took place in an on-campus residence on UC San Diego’s campus on Friday.

The incident took place on the university’s Warren campus, east of the Geisel Library, at 2 a.m., according to a UC San Diego police dispatcher. The assailant was described as a white man with a dark complexion and short hair, he said.

The university sent out an all-campus email and activated its automated IM, voice and email notification system this morning at 4:23 am. to inform all students of the crime.

The incident comes two weeks after an attempted kidnapping near UC San Diego’s library. The female who reported this incident said she was able to break free after an unknown man approached her from behind, put a paper bag over her head and tried to drag her off the pathway, according to the release. The suspect was described as light skinned with wavy brown hair, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build and wearing blue jeans.

A university spokesman said "there is no known connection with the attempted kidnapping case a couple weeks ago on campus."

UC San Diego Police gave these general saftety tips for students and staff:

  • Be especially aware of your surroundings.
  • Make sure your doors and windows are locked, even when you are at home.
  • Check to see who is at the door before you open it.
  • Use discretion and caution when taking shortcuts through isolated parts of the campus.
  • Know the location of campus emergency telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
  • Use the UCSD Escort Program, 858-534-WALK, available daily from dusk to dawn.
  • Use the campus shuttles from with stops located throughout campus and outlying parking lots.
  • Report suspicious activity to UCSD Police 858-534-4357 or 9-1-1 for emergencies. “If you see something, say something."
