2 Men Accused in Series of Armed Holdups Headed to Court

Benjamin Hernandez, 23, and Joseph Andres Garcia, 19, are each charged with multiple felony counts of robbery and attempted robbery in connection with the Feb. 2 robbery spree including in La Jolla.

Two men accused in a series of armed holdups in which a gun was held to the heads of some of the victims were scheduled to be at the downtown San Diego courthouse today for a preliminary hearing

Benjamin Hernandez, 23, and Joseph Andres Garcia, 19, are each charged with multiple felony counts of robbery and attempted robbery in connection with the Feb. 2 robbery spree that targeted pedestrians in Ocean Beach, downtown, Point Loma and at UC San Diego.

The robberies took place between 6:30 and 11:30 p.m. Nearly a dozen victims had their cellphones and wallets taken, authorities said.

A judge will decide at the end of the preliminary hearing whether there's enough evidence to order the defendants to stand trial.
