Issue: Can Intensive Therapy Cure Filner of ‘Intimidating’ Behavior?

Dr. Mark Kalish told U-T San Diego: "This idea that there is some clinic that is going to fix him in two weeks, I can't imagine who or what that would be."

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner was to begin inpatient counseling Monday morning for what he called his “intimidating conduct.’’

“Let me be absolutely clear,’’ Filner said July 26, when he announced a two-week leave of absence for behavioral modification. “The behavior I have engaged in over many years is wrong. My failure to respect women and the the intimidating conduct I engaged in at times is inexcusable.”

But experts overwhelmingly doubt that habits of many years can be fixed in two weeks, with San Diego psychiatrist Mark A. Kalish telling U-T San Diego:  “This idea that there is some clinic that is going to fix him in two weeks, I can’t imagine who or what that would be.”

The mayor believes he can get help with his problems. But will two weeks be enough?  Or can therapy put Filner on track to resume his duties? Share your thoughts in the comments.
