Poll: Should Students and Teachers be Friends on Facebook?

Almost any teacher with a Facebook profile can tell you, friend requests from students are common. But is accepting a friend request from a student a risk no teacher should take?

Inappropiate student-teacher relationships have been in the news and courtrooms for years, but are cyber relationships on Facebook a different story?

According to the Huffington Post, "some teachers say social media – in particular Facebook – can be a vital educational resource if used appropriately, especially because it's a primary means of communication for today's youngsters."

However, that same article also reported a teacher in New York "friended several female students and wrote comments including 'this is sexy' under their photos."  And "a substitute teacher sent a message to a student saying that her boyfriend did not 'deserve a beautiful girl like you'."

What do you think? What do your kids think? If you're a teacher, what are your feelings? Take our poll, and leave us your comments.
