Poll: Afghanistan War Death Toll Hits 2,000—Is Mission Worth Loss?

New York Times says Camp Pendleton regiment among the worst hit—with 25 Marines killed.

President Obama aims to end America’s military role in Afghanistan in 2014, and Mitt Romney has said the drawdown should be careful. But with 2,000 U.S. lives lost in that region—and killings of GIs associated with that country’s own security forces growing—some are calling for an immediate U.S. pullout. From Camp Pendleton, the 3rd Batallion, 5th Marine Regiment lost 25 troops in seven months, the second-highest toll of the war, according to a New York Times analysis.  Is the mission still justified?

Belinda might be on to something. If we kept the money at home, we could use it to drill for more oil, build a series of dams to store our water, and recruit enough Homeland Security agents to rid the interior of the United State of illegal aliens.
Good plan Belinda!

Something Americans have no concept of is war on our home soil. Can you imagine bombs going off here in La Mesa and houses disappearing? BTW, your homeowner's insurance will NOT cover it, look at the fine print in your policy. It won't cover losses from rioting either.
Sarah Riccitelli August 23, 2012 at 04:21 pm
Ditto Batman. The last time we fought a war on our home soil was the Civil War over a hundred years ago. This has led to an extraordinary loss of perspective on our part, as well as a longing to be in the center of the action.

Forget about Afghanistan, the President tells me that Syria has WMDs ( oh sorry he calls them chemical/biological weapons for obvious reasons) and that we have drawn a line in the sand.
http://newyork.newsday.com/news/nation/obama-concern-over-chemical-weapons-in-syria-1.3915927 Sounds familiar ? Where is the " quagmire" crowd now?
Komfort August 23, 2012 at 05:04 pm
Did Syria inherit their WMD's from Iraq?
Kevin George August 23, 2012 at 05:15 pm
K, c'mon man, there were no WMDs in Iraq.
Cindy Sheehan told me so. That is why the British didn't destroy two bunkers full in Baghdad last month. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/world/54590384-68/chemical-iraqi-british-weapons.html.csp

Warmaking is just another tool for the rich industrialists and gun happy, God-spouting politicians, Our leaders spout ideological dogma or whine about being "picked on" by foreign despots a reason for starting these unwinnable conquests. It's more about huge profits and prestige for a few, on the back of our precious young people. That's why we've lost every war over the past 60 years. Greed and power are great motivations for fabricating wars, but not very effective motivations for winning wars.

"On Monday afternoon, Mr. Obama sent a letter to congressional leaders officially notifying them of the military action and saying it is “in the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States, pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct U.S. foreign relations and as commander in chief and chief executive.”
He also stressed that the U.S. was acting in compliance with U.N. Security Council resolution 1973, which he mentioned five times in the two-page letter." http://washingtontimes.com/news/2011/mar/21/obama-defends-military-attacks-libya/

It's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay past time to bring our troops home!!!! Why do we keep sending our beloved troops over there only to be slaughtered. That country will never change. As soon as we leave, things in Afghanistan will revert to the way they were before we arrived. Bring our troops home NOW!!!!!!!

dave.. the only way we could achieve your goal, if i read it correctly, is to leave our troops there forever..essentially occupy afghanistan..
i don't think that's worth it to us..we can take out the taliban and al aqeda if they actually come close enough to threaten us again.. we've gotten a lot better at watching them.. they're not going to come marching down the street in front of the white house.. i simply see no need, and no real compelling u.s. interest for keeping this thing going on.. and on..and on.. doug

President's latest slip-up was calling Admiral William McRaven a general
Comes days after he and Ohio State University students spelled Ohio 'O-I-H-O' http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2192643/Barack-Obama-botches-rank-Navy-SEAL-William-McRaven.html
Dick Pilgrim August 24, 2012 at 02:35 am
Kevin, did you read the article? There was a key statement, "Most of Iraq’s chemical weapons were destroyed by military forces in 1991 during the first Gulf War or by U.N. inspectors after the fighting."

Thang never served, is afraid to give his name, likes George Bush, who gave the movie bigmouth cowboy "Dead or Alive" speech, and then later said "I don't really think about" bin Laden much anymore.
Thang, whoever she is, also likes Romney who showed where his real interests lie when he said he wouldn't spend a lot of MONEY going after bin Laden, the mastermind of 9/11. The President made that call. Every person not in a coma, except the 24/7Fox viewers who post here so often, knows it. Obama didn't have to do it, but he did. Had the mission failed, Thang and 24/7 Fox viewers would be screaming for BO's impeachment! But since the operation succeeded, they now can only say he had nothing to do with it. I'd be upset if you weren't so sick. Thang and 24/7 Fox viewers, you can still hate him, hate him 24/7 as Fox tells you to do. That is your right. But don't look so totally juvenile by not giving BO credit he deserves, and even say Valerie Jarrett tells the Prez what to do. There's lots of other things you can try to hit him on, but this "he's just golfing all the time"' stuff is truly lame. Go back to the KenyanCommunistAtheistMuslimAlienHe-Doesn't-Understand-What-Being-A-Real(read white)AmericanMeans HeCantReadBut GraduatedFromHarvardHowDiDThatHappenForgedBirthCertificate stuff. We'd rather see just the hilarious stuff, not this claim, which is contemptible, and could only be dreamed up by the team on Fox, and believed by beings like you.

General Butler, a REAL Marine, unlike some running for office locally, was a man who told it like it was. Veterans of war - except those who must turn their less than heroic wartime experience into a giant "Here-Look-At-Me" Neon Sign (but try to look humble doing it), because, except for time in a war zone they have never done anything in their entire lives that's even worth mentioning - and especially veterans from Iraq/Afghanistan who were REALLY "in harm's way," read General Butler and are truly impressed to think a general would be so honest and tell it like it really is.
Craze, you may see some try to attack General Butler here, but Butler would not mind. They are the very same type of people he was telling us about.
David B Secor August 24, 2012 at 06:07 am
Mr. Fenner, there is no legitimate government in Afghanistan. It is a "war" that cannot be "won." The illusion that the Taliban are the only people in Afghanistan that want us out is simple-minded. Likewise, to believe that U.S. troops, even in much larger numbers, could stabilize that "country," which is really just a group of quasi-independent regions, autonomous tribal areas, and Kabul. Put away the John Wayne costume and face reality of geo-politics and the limits of American power
When the Pakistanis closed the supply land bridge to Afghanistan because we had accidentally killed 24 of their troops, we spent an extra $100 million a month to supply our people in Afghanistan. Our troops are being killed by Pentagon contractor Afghan employees who were hired to be guards, and by people willing to blow themselves up to get us out. If your crusade against the Taliban is that important, get a plane ticket, go over their and volunteer to join Karzai's forces yourself. Not one more troop should die there. This endless war idea being pushed by extremists in Congress to feed their Pentagon contractor friends actually weakens America. This country is falling apart. Construction workers, contractors and suppliers are ready to move on rebuilding this nation. JOBS! Our infrastructure, education system, manufacturing base, energy independence, research and development, healthcare system, that's where that $100 million a month could have been going.

K - Seriously, you need to get some help about this "Obama" thing that has taken up every corner of your mind. No one can possibly be so obsessed with one person, turning every poll or article on Patch, even if it's about sewing or little league baseball, into some evil deed by BO. Surely a friend must have mentioned that this is not normal, not even close. I didn't like LBJ or Nixon for sending me to war, it was close to hate, at least extreme and lingering resentment, but I've never felt toward anyone the way you seem to do about BO. I go off track, too, but ignoring the topic entirely and going to BO calling an admiral a general, and posting the link! And BO misspelling Ohio!? Go to the Helpline before the obsession drives you totally nuts.

Well, this certainly is a cynical, and entirley inaccurate statement. We won the war in Vietnam, finally. Signed a truce, left under favorable conditions, then the congress refused to provide aid to the south , - allowed it then to be overrun by the Communist forces from the north. Now, they all live under repression and Communist governement. Sorry to inform you, as a pessimist, but we DID win that war. And Doug, leaving Afghans right now, will result in same thing over there, without our help. But, of course, if you don't care about anybody, or other peoples in the world, then, yes, we should just get out and forget about it. Souldn't be helping Israel either, let them be buried. We'll just go home and live our own lives in happiness. Sort of like President Wilson suggested a hundred years ago. When will we ever learn.?
