Electricity Consumption Spikes During the Holiday Season

As we say goodbye to high summer temperatures and blasting air conditioning, we welcome cooling temperatures accompanied by Fall and the upcoming holiday season.  Turkeys and Christmas trees are just around the corner, and before we know it, the holiday season will be in full swing. This year American consumers should expect not only to empty their pockets on gifts for loved ones, but also on significantly higher electric bills. A combination of cold weather, rising heating costs, and higher consumption of electricity will leave many feeling the hefty impact.

Last week the government forecasted that most U.S. households will pay more for heat this winter, stating that more than 90 percent of homes will incur higher heating expenses. This statement was based on the higher price of natural gas, propane, and electricity. However, this statement doesn’t fully take into consideration cold winter temperatures and the usage of electronic gadgets. Meteorologists expect below average temperatures and mildly cold weather this winter, with temperatures varying throughout the United States.

It is not just the consumption of heat and the occurrence of cold weather that causes electricity bills to skyrocket. Christmas lights are illuminating entire blocks, children are out of school on “holiday break”  increasing household electrical consumption, relatives visiting from out of town, and then of course, the new electronics from Santa – all of these factors add up.  According to Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power, a leading renewable energy firm, Southern California residents typically have the highest bills in the months of September and December.
