Tom McAfee, Former UCSD Dean, Dies in Accident in Africa

UC San Diego officials said McAfee's cause of death had not yet been released.

Thomas “Tom” McAfee, UC San Diego’s former dean of clinical affairs, died in Africa, according to reports.

Debra Kain, director of Health Sciences Research Communications at UC San Diego, told NBC 7 that McAfee recently died in an accident while on vacation in Tanzania, Africa. His cause of death had not yet been released at the time of the report.

McAfee’s was to start a new job as CEO of the Keck Medicine of USC Medical Foundation at the University of Southern California tomorrow.

“It’s a true tragedy and great loss to all of us at UCSD. We are planning several events in celebration of Dr. McAfee's life,” Mounir Soliman, assistant vice chancellor and executive director of Health Sciences International at UC San Diego, told NBC.

UCS said McAfee's background includes more than 10 years at the UCSD Health System, where he was also president of the UCSD Ambulatory Surgery Center, CEO of the UCSD Faculty Practice, and clinical professor in the Department of Medicine at the UCSD School of Medicine.
