La Jollan called "one of the more intellectual judges and legal professionals I've ever run into."

Ray Zvetina died of lung cancer Feb. 8 in La Jolla, according to a U-T San Diego obituary published Thursday. He was 79.

Zvetina was an assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago, an assistant U.S. attorney who headed the civil division in San Diego and a North County and San Diego Superior Court judge, the U-T said.

“He was among our finest judges,” retired Superior Court Judge Norbert Ehrenfreund was quoted as saying. “He had a real sense of justice. He was a good listener and he could keep an open mind.”
