Friends Salute Late Cyclist Jackie Dunn With Memorial Bike Ride

The naval officer's wife, a bike enthusiast with Texas roots, died Tuesday in a San Diego cycling accident. Her services will be in La Jolla Monday.

A memorial ride in honor of late cyclist Jackie Price Dunn, wife of a naval officer, started and finished at Tidelands Park in Coronado Saturday, two days before a memorial service is set to be held in La Jolla.

Dunn, 33, died Tuesday, according to NBC San Diego, in a “freak accident” at the San Diego Velodrome at Morley Field in North Park. Hundreds were expected for the memorial ride, as more than 300 people committed to it on a Facebook page set up in memory of Dunn.

In addition, friends have raised $14,000 to cover her family's expenses, but her husband, according to the fund site, has opted to use the money to fund causes close to Dunn's heart.

Her services are set for Monday at 12:30 p.m. at La Jolla Presbyterian Church, 7715 Draper Ave.

Dunn was remembered on a web site, crankcycling.com: “As a new racer, she would show up to races that didn’t have a category for her and race with the men; she wanted to race and she was going to find a way to do it. The caring part? Well, that along with her enthusiasm was one of her best assets.  Racers can be very narcissistic, but Jackie was always way one to ask how your race went, or tell you that you looked good out there.”

On the Velodrome's web site, Dunn's death was called a shock and “a terrible loss.”

“Words cannot express our shock and sadness,” the Velodrome post said. “Jackie was an enthusiastic rider and experienced success in a short amount  of time.”
