Elaine May Weirather Dies at 86; Lived 50 Years in La Jolla

Her family moved to Lemon Grove after her daughter, Donna, was born, and had a son there.

Elaine May Weirather—a 50-year resident of La Jolla—died Sept. 23, according to an obituary in the La Jolla Light.

She was 86.

“In her late teens, she enjoyed working as an ‘elevator girl’ at the El Cortez Hotel, where her biggest brush with fame was meeting Harpo Marx,” her obituary said.

The family moved to Lemon Grove after her daughter, Donna, was born, and there they had a son, Edward. She worked at General Dynamics for 10 years, the paper said.

Eventually her family moved to La Jolla, where they had their third child, Michael, the only surviving member of the family.

“Elaine will be laid to rest in a private ceremony next to Hal, her husband of over 40 years, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery,” her obituary said.
