The Plan: Remember

God loves you and has had a plan for you since before you were born.

When Jesus came to earth, God knew that the world was lost and He already had a plan to save it.  Jesus wasn’t sent to earth to try things out or to see what might happen.  His plan was to speak the truth, suffer and die, and create the church that would bring hope to the world.  We are the plan in place to bring hope to the world – there is no Plan B!

God is not going to save the world through the government or earthly powers.  Only Jesus has the power to change hearts and bring life through His church.

This series explores God’s plan for His church and the heart that we must have in order to fulfill that plan.  God is not going to save the world through the government or earthly powers.  Only Jesus has the power to change hearts and bring life through His church.

As a church body, today we will take part in communion to begin this new message series.  We do this to prepare our hearts and to remember – but what are we called to remember?

We remember the first Passover in Exodus.

We remember when God instructed His people to kill an unblemished lamb and use its blood over the doors of their households so that their children would be saved from death.

And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning.  For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you. And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever. Exodus 12:22-24

Just as God used the death of an unblemished lamb to save the Israelites, He uses the blood of His perfect and godly Son to save His people in the New Testament.   For this reason, John the Baptist says of Jesus in John 1:29, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

In taking communion, we remember what Jesus has done for us.

The act of taking communion does not save us; it is simply a reminder of what we believe, that Jesus’ body was broken for us and His blood was shed for us, all to take away our sin.

And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”  Luke 22:19-20

We remember the example of sacrificial love that Jesus gave us.

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”  John 15:13

Communion reminds us that, like Jesus, we are called to make sacrifices for others.  As Jesus’ followers, we give of our time, our prayers, our concern, our money, and our desires – there are times when all of these things must be laid down for the sake of another.

God loves you and has had a plan for you since before you were born.

God loves you and has had a plan for you since before you were born.  The Bible reveals connections throughout history to illustrate the amazing, coordinated nature of God.  If He has all of history in His plan, He can surely coordinate our short lives!
