Kingdom Come - Part 1, Kingdom Creator

This 4-part series examines what it really means to the have the kingdom of God here on earth and how to release the power of God in your life. Part 1 discusses the Holy Spirit's role in God's creation of the earth.

In this series, our aim is to be used by God, that His will would be done on earth as it is in heaven.  We embark today into the story of creation and will continue to explore the story of God’s plan for salvation throughout the entire Bible in 2014.

Think of the sofa in your living room.  Imagine its cushions, fabric, and pillows.  Experience tells us that the sofa could not have created itself nor given itself a purpose.  For example, it has cushions for sitting and a back and arms for supporting bodies; it cannot suddenly decide that its purpose is to wash dishes because it does not have the design it would need for that function.  Thus it is with all limited objects: some type of creator must give them purpose, design them, and bring them into existence.

This same rule applies to our entire universe. On earth, we experience the sun, the moon, land, water, fish, birds, insects, etc., but all of those things are limited.  They did not create themselves or give themselves a purpose.  Nor did we create ourselves or give ourselves purpose.  None of us formed the organs in our bodies, decided where we would be born or planned out what kind of talents we would receive.  Someone had to design us with a purpose in mind—and that Someone was God.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse… Romans 1:20

If we believe that our living room sofas had to be made by someone else, then it is difficult to understand how something as complex as the universe could make itself.  Genesis 1 explains to us that God was the Designer and Creator of the universe—and of human beings.

The Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) each have an active role in creation, salvation, and judgment.  God the Father is the Planner, the Son executes the contract to pay for our sin, and the Spirit is sent to execute God’s plan and build His kingdom.

Though we have minds to understand the Gospel and bodies to go to church, the Spirit is the active being in our lives who speaks to us, heals us, and transforms our minds.  The Holy Spirit was present even from before the beginning of time.  So how was the Holy Spirit involved in creating the heavens and the earth?

  • The Holy Spirit is a Person, not a force.  John 16:7-14
  • The Holy Spirit is all God.  Psalm 139:7-10, Acts 5, 1 John 4:2
  • The Holy Spirit knows the will of God. Romans 8:26-27
  • The Holy Spirit has a role in creation.  Genesis 1:1-2

1. The Holy Spirit gave order to God’s creation.Genesis 1:1-2

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:1-2

In the beginning, the earth was chaotic.  There was nothing until God made something.  The Holy Spirit hovered over the darkness/chaos/disorder.

At times, even our lives can be chaotic, disorderly, and have no form.  Our ideas can be cloudy, our relationships complicated, confused, and muddled.  But the Holy Spirit brings order and clarity to our lives.  If you have an area of life in chaos, pray now that the Holy Spirit would bring you peace and clarity and help to organize your life.

2. The Holy Spirit brought beauty and uniqueness to God’s creation. Job 26:13, Psalm 104:30, Exodus 31:3

God’s Word tells us that we are all unique.  There is no other person on earth with your exact combination of spiritual gifts, personality, or experiences.  You were created that God’s will could be fulfilled on earth as He expresses Himself through you, a very special part of his kingdom.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal your uniqueness and guide you into fulfilling the purposes for which you were created.

3. The Holy Spirit gives life to God’s creation. Genesis 1:26, Job 33:4

God the Father formulated the plan for us and the Spirit gives us life.

By the fall of Adam and Eve’s sin in the garden, death was introduced into the world and we discover that there are two kinds of life: physical and spiritual.  Physical life allows us to be present on the earth, breathing, eating, and moving. But spiritual life is born of having a relationship with the living God—it can’t come from anywhere else.

Because we didn’t create ourselves nor give ourselves a purpose, God is the Provider of our purpose.  He desires us to be in relationship with Him.  If we don’t have that, we can be existing but not thriving, alive but without real life.

The choice is ours to invite the Lord into our lives to breathe real spiritual life into us through the sacrifice of His Son.  The Spirit of God wants to organize our lives and give us peace and purpose as we realize our unique roles in the kingdom of God, just as was intended from the beginning.
