Outdoor Film & Wine Series to Screen in La Jolla

"Flicks on the Bricks" will run each Thursday night in August at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla. Tickets are available now.

Each summer the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library shows classic films outside on its patio in its "Flicks on the Bricks" series. This year's films will be shown on August 1, 8, 15 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available now.
 
Ticket for the four film series are $60 for members and $80 for nonmembers. Individual screenings are $17 for members and $22 for nonmembers and can be purchased online or by calling 858-454-5872.

Thursday, August 1, at 7:30 p.m.: The Big Sleep (1946)

Humphrey Bogart stars as Philip Marlowe, Raymond Chandler’s tough, cynical, but charming private eye. Marlowe investigates thegambling debts of the wealthy General Sternwood’s younger daughter and is plunged into a world of blackmail, deception, and violence. Lauren Bacall is the general’s older daughter and the sparks fly between her and Bogie in a classic duo performance. Paired with Pinot Noir. 

Thursday, August 8, at 7:30 p.m.: Rear Window (1954)

Wheelchair-bound photojournalist L.B. Jeffries (James Stewart) and his beautiful fiancée Lisa Fremont (Grace Kelly) spy on their neighbors and then solve a brutal murder no one else believes occurred. Unavailable for more than twenty years, Hitchcock’s Rear Window is an eloquently entertaining, exhilarating, and bittersweet film. Paired with vin français. 

Thursday, August 15, at 7:30 p.m.: Cinema Paradiso (1989)

A young boy is mesmerized by a movie theater and strikes up a dynamic friendship with its warm-hearted projectionist. The film takes place after World War II in a small rural town, where the story follows the pair’s bittersweet relationship. In Italian with English subtitles. Partially sponsored by Cinema Little Italy. Paired with vino italiano. 

Thursday, August 22, at 7:30 p.m.: The Big Easy (1986)

Dennis Quaid stars as a tough, fast-talking New Orleans police detective who isn’t above accepting free meals from all-too-obliging restaurants. Ellen Barkin stars as a pretty, sexually repressed assistant district attorney, assigned to investigate police corruption. Paired with Big Easy Red Malbec and Bawdy Bubbles King Creole Surprise.
