One Year Ago Today: Tsunami Watching in La Jolla

One year ago a crowd of curious onlookers and a few brave surfers gathered at the beaches in La Jolla to watch for waves as a result of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan.

One year ago today, many Americans woke up to the news of a devastating earthquake in Japan. The earthquake's effects were expected to reach the West Coast by mid-morning and many took to the coastal bluffs and sandy stretching to watch from a distance.

Data collected off Scripps Pier showed the tsunami arriving in La Jolla around 8:50 a.m.

The swells caused the ocean to briefly rise 2.8 feet in La Jolla, 1.2 feet at San Diego Navy Pier and 2.6 feet in Imperial Beach, according to the National Weather Service.
