Microchip Your Pet for $10 Sunday at the County Animal Shelter

It's a small price to pay if you ever find yourself needing to be reunited with a lost dog or cat.

A petite Pomeranian was reunited with her Chula Vista family in June after nearly three months of living rough. How? The wandering pooch was identified by a microchip.

Dawn Danielson, director of San Diego County's Department of Animal Services, says getting your pet microchipped is the best way reunited owners with their lost pets. She's encouraging the public to microchip their animal companions as part of disaster planning.

With peak fire season approaching, now's the time.

“It could save your pet’s life,” Danielson said. “We have rescued hundreds of animals during past fires and the first thing we do is check for a microchip.”

The county will offer the service for just $10 Sunday, Sept. 15, at the DAS facility on Gaines Street in San Diego. Rabies vaccinations, dog licensing, and coupons to help pay for spaying and neutering will also be available.

Shots are $6 for dogs four months old and older and for cats three months old and older.

Owners who have not licensed their dogs or are overdue on a current license will be forgiven late fees . Amnesty will be issued to pet owners who live in the unincorporated county or in the cities of San Diego, Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Santee and Solana Beach, which contract with County Animal Services.

The spay/neuter coupons are for discounts of $50 for female pets, and $25 for male pets.

The microchip clinic takes place from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at 5480 Gaines St., San Diego. Bring your dog secured on a leash or your cat in a carrier for safety.
