The new Common Core State Standards developed by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers are now in the implantation stage in the schools throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties.
The Common Core Standards are “designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.”

Now, instead of rote memorization, students must analyze WHY and HOW individuals, events and ideas develop and interact. Importantly, the new performance-based assessment of Common Core will eliminate things like multiple choice tests. Instead, they will focus on acquisition and application of knowledge, skills and work habits through the performance of tasks that keep students engaged.

The demands of a rapidly changing global marketplace require that our students graduate from high school prepared to successfully enter college, postsecondary training and the the workforce. The knowledge application is the key for students' success in their higher education and future career.
Our JA programs and volunteers provide students with these 21st century skills. We teach students about collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, soft skills development, resume writing, and career exploration and planning. Often, these skills are not learned proactively. At JA, we are here to change that.
