Microsoft And JA Take Kids To Work

In January, the Microsoft Store of Fashion Valley hosted four different schools all around San Diego County and gave them an in-depth look into the careers in Microsoft.

As a technology user, I know I take for granted the role stores like Apple or Microsoft have in keeping me sane as I try to figure out what new phone I need, or when I get the dreaded "blue screen of death." Last month, I was able to get a clearer view of the value of these stores and so did 140 high school students from King-Chavez Charter, Crawford, Hilltop and El Cajon Valley.

In January, the Microsoft Store of Fashion Valley hosted four different schools all around San Diego County and gave them an in-depth look into the history of Microsoft, careers at the Microsoft Store and a bit about how the store operates. The teenagers then got to put their marketing skills to the test by creating their own mini commercials on one of six Microsoft products.

While Sunday's Super Bowl had the funniest television ads of 2013, our Junior Achievement students might have had the best ads on a budget! Don't take my word for it, check out one of the commercials for yourself.

Junior Achievement might be known for our world-renowned financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs, but the JA Job Shadow program is one of the most compelling career exploration opportunities for our high school students. The opportunity I have to "shadow" companies along with the hundreds of students in Job Shadow this school year, has been eye opening!

This month, I'm looking forward to riding an ambulance, sequencing DNA and building a wireless network. Okay, maybe I won't actually be "doing" all these things but the behind the scenes tour is just as cool!
