All Things University City: Friday Night Lights Are On

University City...more than a neighborhood. We explore what lies within the borders of the "Golden Triangle" and look into UC's residents, schools, shopping, dining, activities, issues, and more.

Friday Night Lights finally arrive in University City! WooHoo – you know where to find this author during home football games – yes at University City High School cheering on our Centurions. UCHS played their first varsity football game under the new lights last night, Friday, August 31, against the Hoover High School Cardinals. The Cardinals did end up winning 28-8, but it was fun actually having a night game under the lights, watching the cheerleader spirit, and the dance team moves at half time. Centurions scored when sophomore quarterback Dominic Lewis threw a brilliant pass to junior wide receiver Kyle LeBlanc.

There was a one questionable moment when the lights went out for about ten minutes soon after half time, but administrators got them to slowly turn back on after ten minutes or so. (Personally, I was wondering if one of the disapproving neighbors on the hill cut the electrical cords.) While waiting, we were able to use our flashlight apps on our phones. If you don’t have it, I recommend downloading one. And it has a really cool strobe effect too.

Save the dates for future Friday Night Lights at UCHS, all starting at 6:30pm:

  • September 14 vs. Southwest – Special Field Dedication Ceremony
  • September 28 vs. Serra
  • October 26 vs. Christian – Homecoming
  • November 2 vs. Clairemont – Seniors Mom Night

The beginning of football season means kids are back to school. As usual, we lament the fact that the summer went too fast and our kids are growing up quickly. And take it from one that worked from home for a decade, it’s also okay to be eagerly awaiting to get the kids back to school all day so you can get some me time again. It’s a good thing we trust our kids to such great teachers in the UC cluster.

So everyone else, remember the following school times, and map out your drives accordingly and avoid the Governor and Genesee rush hours.

  • University City High School: 7:24am - 2:12pm
  • Standley Middle School: 9:05am – 3:50pm
  • Curie Elementary: 7:50am – 2:10pm
  • Doyle Elementary: 7:40am – 2:00pm
  • Spreckels Elementary: 9:05am – 3:35pm

And for this typical Saturday morning as I drove from one end of Governor Drive to the other, what did I see on this beautiful sunny day? A number of volunteers working on UC Little League’s Fort Field (changing to 50/70 dimensions); players and spectators at Standley Park for Mesa Soccer/Nott’s Forest Annual Labor Day Tournament; and lots of residents, walking, running and biking. Another wonderful day in the neighborhood.
