La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Sponsors a Day at the Ranch for 16 Kearny High Students

Students complete repairs and upgrades to earn time in the saddle

La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary recently sponsored the visit of 16 students to the Partners Therapeutic Horsemanship facility in Lakeside for a day of community service and horseback riding. The students are enrolled in the USD TRiO Upward Bound Program at Kearny High and completed community service work by painting, leveling paddocks, cleaning a storage and tack shed, planting flowerbeds, and building rock dividers.

When the chores were done, the Upward Bound students received an introduction to basic horsemanship from Partners TH volunteers, including time in the saddle. La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotarians provided lunch for all participants, and also presented a donation to Partners TH, in support of their riding programs for persons with disabilities.  The hands-on, daylong event afforded the Upward Bound students an experiential opportunity that promotes teamwork and social responsibility while earning service credits, learning and having fun.

“This uplifting day offers positive outcomes and lasting memories for everyone involved,” says Rotarian and project co-director Louise Andres.  “The students are enriched by the community service experience and their interaction with the horses – and the facility benefits from the completed maintenance tasks and grounds keeping.”
