Restaurateur Collecting Unwanted Jewelry for Public Sale on Saturday

Owners of Bernini's Bistro are now collecting unwanted jewelry to sell next Saturday, April 28 to raise funds for Indian street children.

Next Saturday, April 28, La Jolla restaurateur Reyhan Gumustekin hopes to raise enough money to send several Indian street children to the Alpha Montessori School in East Delhi, India. 

Gumustekin, co-owner of Bernini's Bistro, is now collecting unwanted jewelry of all types for this year’s sale. Donations are being accepted during operating hours at , located at 7550 Fay Av. in the village.

The public sale will be held on Saturday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bernini’s. All proceeds from the sale of donated jewelry will benefit the Alpha Montessori School project.

“Last year our donations ran the gamut from sophisticated estate pieces to children’s bangles and earrings,” said Gumustekin. “Because we’re happy to accept any kind of donation, our sale is able to offer something for both adults and children.”

Gumustekin said the sponsored children reside in the Mandawali slum, and include:

• Six-year-old Radha, one of five children, whose father works as a rickshaw driver, and mother as a maid. Radha and her family live on $80 per month and live in a one-room rental.

• Five-year-old Antima, whose family lives on $60 per month. Antima’s father works as a security guard and her mother is illiterate.

About the Alpha Montessori School: Located in Mandawali in East Delhi, the school educates low-income children from nursery through second grade using the Montessori method.
