Best Bet for the Weekend for Families With Teens: Young Leaders Film Festival

These acclaimed independent documentaries and features were carefully vetted by festival organizers Moms With Issues for families with teens 14+.

Welcome to the world premiere of the Young Leaders Film Festival –screening this weekend, June 22-24 – in the Four Flowers Theater at La Jolla Country Day School, 9490 Genesee Avenue, La Jolla, CA 92037. Two free parking lots are available off Genesee and off Eastgate Mall.

Sing Your Song

5 Broken Cameras

A documentary collaboration between an Israeli and a Palestinian farmer whose life is disrupted by the building of Israel’s security fence near his west bank village. The story is told through the lenses of five cameras, each which is broken in the struggle.

SHOWTIMES: Saturday June 23 – 10 a.m. and Sunday June 24 – 4 p.m.

The Hammer

A sports drama depicting the struggles and successes Matt Hamill faces on the way to becoming the first deaf wrestler to win a National Collegiate Championship.

SHOWTIME: Saturday June 23 - 1 p.m.

Inside Hana’s Suitcase

A battered suitcase with Hana Brady’s name on it is delivered to the Tokyo Holocaust Museum from the Auschwitz Museum. The film follows the search to discover the details of Hanaʼs life.

SHOWTIMES: Saturday June 23 – 4 p.m. and Sunday June 24 – 1 p.m.

Musical Chairs

Susan Seidelman’s romantic tale of two New Yorkers who come together through their love of ballroom dancing. When a tragic accident puts one of them in a wheelchair, she is introduced to the world of competitive wheelchair ballroom dancing.

SHOWTIMES: Saturday June 23 – 7 p.m. and Sunday June 24 – 10 a.m.

The Festival concludes Sunday at 7 p.m. with free “Sunday Night Shorts,” six short films, plus animated shorts provided by National Public Radio’s StoryCorps, and films from the 1st Annual La Jolla Country Day School Student Video and Film Festival.
