Blog: To Own A Gun, Or Not To Own A Gun

Not owning a gun in America is a lot safer!

There hasn’t been a militia in America since the 18th century! A militia that gives you the right to carry a gun into a movie house—is a fiction. Syria has militias; the U.S. does not.

The idea of a private army—and the right-leaning Supreme Court’s interpretation of the Second Amendment that gives you the right to carry—is only good for gun dealers. And we don’t need a militia; we have a National Guard.

Americans who own guns represent only 21 percent of the population, but they own two-thirds of all the guns in the world! They own a thousand times more guns than the U.S. military and every law enforcement department in the nation combined. And they own weapons that can mow down a classroom of children in seconds.

Are you a hunter? Do you live in the wilderness and track animals to kill, gut, and cook for dinner? Or, do you hunt and kill animals for ”sport?” Fortunately for the prey, hunters represent less than 5 percent of the population, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

For gun lovers, the NRA is more than an organization that represents gun manufacturers. The NRA is more of a religious institution. Gun owners believe in it, and “sacrifice” wildlife in praise of NRA God LaPierre who hath provided their weapons not to feed the starving, not to clothe the poor, but to shoot and kill. What fun. The NRA has sold you a bill of goods, not a Bill of Rights. They don’t care about anything or anyone; their bottom line is their bottom line. The blasphemous NRA hasn’t read your New Testament.

Do you think the founding fathers cared more about your right to protect yourself than they did about defending the nation from foreign attack, from the British, for instance? Do you think they anticipated an attack on you and your family by the U.S. Army? Is that what they said in the Constitution?

Some say farmers need guns to kill snakes, wolves and the occasional marauding bear. Maybe, but I doubt it. As a kid, I spent years on a farm, shot a couple copperheads. It wasn’t unusual to hear a shotgun blast. But the number of farms and farm boys are dwindling even in red states. Folks who live in rural, as opposed to urban areas, represent only 20 percent of the population. The vermin you find carrying guns in big cities are far more dangerous than the varmints you find on farms.

When a gun is shot in West Philly, where my cousin’s family still lives, everybody hunkers down behind anything handy, waiting for a bullet or bullets to come through the living room window. Not too many gun-loving families in West Philly.

Do you think anyone who isn’t a criminal or a psychopath should carry a gun? It’s a distinct possibility if the NRA has its way. Now, suppose the impossible: your wife, your child, someone you love is gunned down, murdered. It’s hard to imagine, but try. You can’t imagine the horror, heartache, frustration, anger, and loneliness that lasts forever! Would you give up your guns in order to save that loved one? Of course, and you wouldn’t be alone.

There are far more people in America who do not own guns than those who do. We should let the police do their job and vote to make America a safer place to live. Deciding to own a gun in America is a dangerous decision. Not to own a gun is a lot safer!
