Pits – Farmers Market is Full of Them

From cherries to avocados, 'tis the season at the market.

Written By Melissa Phy

Sometimes, life can be the pits. But at the La Jolla Ope Aire Market, pits are aplenty–and that's a good thing!

Most stone fruit shows up at the market in the summer, but there are still of plenty of pits to choose from at the weekly event.

Check out the fruits below and find out why being in the pits ain't such a bad thing. (Just remember to avoid crunching down on one!)

Cherries

Cherries are back. These stone fruits are a sure sign of the summer season and are juicy and sweet.

I suggest snacking on these midday for an energy boost or to curb that sweet tooth. Don't forget to spit out that pit!

Olives

Flavors of the cured and marinated green and kalamata olives are ever-changing, but expect rosemary garlic, sage-thyme and more. You could even pair up the olives with some cheese and cherries for a party platter. (Remember to put out some bowls for those pits – you sense a theme?)

Avocados

These pits are taken out before you eat the fruit, but they're pits nonetheless. I've talked enough here about , but remember to save that pit for your guacamole – it helps keep it from turning too brown!

The La Jolla Open Aire Market meets at La Jolla Elementary School on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
