The 56th annual La Jolla Christmas Parade will stroll through the Village on Sunday with holiday cheer, but some think the event's name needs to be changed.

The suggestion to change the name from the La Jolla Christmas Parade to the La Jolla Holiday Parade has been in the works for several years now. Area residents have urged the Parade Committee to change the "Christmas" moniker because they say it excludes many other holidays celebrated in December, including Hanukkah.

One parade-goer went as far as calling the annual event "anti-semitic" and the San Diego Human Relations Commission has offered to help resolve the debate over the parade name.

Do you think the parade name should change? Tell us in the comment section below. And let us know what a new name could be.

The name should NOT be changed. There is nothing wrong with the use of the term " Christmas " in the name of the parade . That term has been in use for the entire time period that the parade has existed . For those whom are offended they are free to create another parade and name it as they deem appropiate . To force a name change is not an appropiate solution . There is no problem here. If you don't like the name don't participate, or as previously stated create your own parade . Why should the portion of the popuation that enjoys it as is , be punished ? Let us do our thing & you have the freedom to ignore it or create your own celebration.

It has always been a Christmas Parade, with Santa Claus. Jewish celebrations of Haunakkah usually don't include parades, but rather quieter home celebrations. If Kwanzaa groups or Festivus pole people wanted to add floats, OK, but don't change the name of the parade!

Oh my, don't we have more important issues to debate? Let those of us that enjoy holding onto a little tradition within this overly politically correct portion of history have the pleasure of a Christmas Parade. No one is stopping any group from participating or creating their own parade. Enjoy the season, and if you must fight something, put your energy in helping disadvantaged children have a happy holiday season.

norma damashek December 3, 2013 at 03:58 pm Yes, of course the name should be changed. La Jolla Holiday Parade would work fine. Or La Jolla Winter Festival. Or Light the Lights Parade. Or… A simple name change would be a gift to our community — a positive gesture that benefits local businesses and signifies goodwill to all. Is there a more generous present we could give one another?

Mike Glancy Rohde Plumbing I have had a float in the christmas parade since it started again in 1983. I remember a few years back this was talked about at a meeting at the rec center. I was told more people came to that meeting then normal. Their were over 100 people that came, 99% wanted to keep the name. Why is it still an issue?! *MERRY CHRISTMAS*
