Jewel Concert in La Jolla Raises $561K

Grammy nominee Jewel played a brunch fundraiser in La Jolla earlier this month; the event raised $561,000 for Rachel's Women's Center in San Diego.

Rachel's Women's Center of San Diego is having a great month. The center, which provides a safe place for women escaping homelessness, received $561,000 from a La Jolla fundraiser that took place at the estate of Joan Waitt and featured entertainment by singer-songwriter Jewel on Sept. 9.

The event, Rachel's Brunch, was organized by San Diego hospitality entrepreneur James Brennan to support Rachel's House, which is run by San Diego's Catholic Charities. Brennan, who is linked to Herringbone in La Jolla and several other restaurants throughout San Diego, even donated $39,000.

Jewel, who has struggled with homelessness herself in San Diego at the age of 18, played for an hour at the benefit. She played hits including Who Will Save Your Soul and Foolish Hands. She also met with guests after the performance and took pictures with fans.
