Earth Week Day 2: Recycling Relay

Gillispie's Grade 1 students got their hearts pumping during the school's annual recycling relay, part of Gillispie's Earth Week activities.

The Gillispie School's Grade 1 students got their hearts pumping during the school's annual recycling relay, part of Gillispie's Earth Week activities. Wearing protective gloves, the children grabbed an item from bins filled with scrap paper, plastic, and cans. They then sprinted their selected item to its proper receptacle: trash, cans & plastic bottles, or paper. Students learned that some plastic can be recycled and some cannot--based on the recycling code number on most items. They also discussed the importance of recycling at home in their ongoing efforts to "live green."

Earth Week Tip: What you don’t put in your recycling bin is just as important as what you do recycle. Know what’s recyclable in your community so you don’t contaminate the recycling process. Check with your local recycling and solid waste office for details on your community recycling program, and look up nearby drop-off facilities at www.AmericaRecyclesDay.org/find-recycling where you can bring those harder-to-recycle items.
