Wise Talk: Feel Good About Yourself—Do for Others

Helping yourself by helping others.

I was feeling kind of blue today and thinking of all the mistakes I've made in the past. I started wondering how to pull myself out of the mini depression I was feeling. Then it suddenly came to me; an epiphany, if you will. The easiest way to feel good about yourself is to do something good for someone else.

I am a regular volunteer for the foodmobile program at Jewish Family Service. We deliver hot, kosher meals to the homebound, the invalids, and the elderly.

All of the recipients of the meals are very grateful not only for getting their food, but for seeing a friendly face. Unless they have a caretaker, they don't often see others. Many are physically handicapped, yet almost to the person they are always delighted to see us and are always in a good mood.

Doing this type of volunteer work makes one feel good about one's contribution, but also gives one a huge sense of appreciation of the benefits and good luck we ourselves have had. In plain language one becomes instantly thankful for how good we have things, and for not being made to suffer such as those we help are suffering.

It also gives one an insight into the character of those we help; in spite of their afflictions, they face life with a sense of purpose and a smile. One always finishes the volunteerism with a feeling of self worth and an appreciation for the benefits life was granted us.

So next time you want to feel good about yourself, go out and do something nice for someone else...you'll be a better person in so many ways for having done so. Plus, you'll have done yourself a huge favor.

Finally, if you'd like to offer your services as a volunteer at Jewish Family Service, which agency helps everyone who has a need regardless of race or creed, call them and ask to speak with Melinda Wilkes, director of volunteer Services. You'll be glad you did.
