On Sunday, May 4, the vocal ensemble Cantus will perform for one day only at St. James by-the-Sea in La Jolla, as part of a national tour that will culminate at Washington’s Kennedy Center.
Recognized as one of America’s finest professional vocal ensembles, Cantus enjoys a vigorous schedule of national tours and subscription concerts in its home of Minneapolis. The Washington Post hails the ensemble’s sound as having both "exalting finesse" and "expressive power," and refers to its music-making as "spontaneous grace."
The group's program at St. James, entitled "A Place For Us," features folk songs and spirituals as well as music by Bernstein, Dvorak, Stephen Foster, and Jean Sibelius.
Other stops on Cantus' U.S. tour include concerts at the Cincinnati Opera, Pennsylvania State University, and Wake Forest University.
Cantus is also preparing for the release of a new album, "Song of a Czech: Dvorak and Janacek for Men’s Voices," on October 29, 2014.
The concert is on Sunday, May 4, at 4pm.
Tickets are $25–$30 per person. Children and students are admitted free at concert time, space permitting.
St. James by the Sea is located at 743 Prospect St., La Jolla.
